French Louis XV Commode by J Lebas - Master in 1756 - SOLD

Description

Important Louis XV period marquetry  mounted 'galbee' commode with cartouche shaped inlays of rosewood and kingwood veneers bearing the stamp J Lebas, of Jean-Baptiste Lebas, appointed Master in July of 1756, along with 2 stamps JME signifying Master Cabinetmaker (Jurande des Menuisiers-Ébénistes. The original "Rouge du Maine" marble over five drawers in three rows. The higher row appears as one drawer but it is composed of 3, the central one being secret. There are two rows of large drawers below. On bracket legs.

The pierced foliate chiseled and gilt bronze ornamentation is all original as well as all the locks and key. The structure of the commode is also in amazingly original condition, the exterior only having been lightly refreshed with french polish.
