Georgian Tambour Bureau Desk - Fin.18th Century - ON HOLD

Description

Fine and rare tambour top bureau desk of the George III period, the tambour made out of a single piece of figured mahogany cut into strips and moulded. The entire bureau is constructed of finely figured mahogany decorated with oval paterae, quarter fans and line inlay of boxwood and ebony, especially on all the frontal edges of the bureau. The desk part also has a second interior tambour that locks and slides open to reveal an array of satinwood fronted drawers and small compartments. The desk part slides out as a large drawer that has a tooled leather writing surface that rises at different levels. The center section with the leather surface slides back, once opened with a key and reveals a large hidden area below it. Also hidden on its right side, a tray rotates open that has divisions for inkwells and slots for pens and other writing items. The large cabinet below has two figured mahogany and finely inlaid doors that reveal an interior shelf that is adjustable in height. The bureau is supported by 4 well moulded legs with large casters, which along with 2 brass pulls, one on each side, facilitate movement of the bureau. Everything in this bureau has been made with great precision and taste and works perfectly, especially the tambours that slide open and closed with amazing ease.
