A magnificent French Louis XV style Bureau Plat dating to the end of the 19th century, with outstanding marquetry of exotic woods such as kingwood, amboyna and ebony over a structure of solid oak. The masterful marquetry is applied in “herringbone” patterns that change shade as one moves around the desk. The desk is raised on 4 cabriole legs adorned with gilt brass female heads at the top, the brass adornments continuing downwards ending in gilt brass wraparound paw feet. The sides are also adorned by central round medallions of heads radiating sun rays. There is a large central drawer flanked by 2 smaller ones all with gilt brass handles accentuated by further ornamentation. The opposite side is identical but drawers are simulated. The writing surface with original light brown gilt tooled leather framed by gilt brass moulded borders. Original locks and keys.
