Petite Biedermeier Birch Commode - SOLD

Description

Petite commode of the Biedermeier Renaissance period, end of 19th century, when the Biedermeier style was rediscovered during the exposition of Applied Arts of Vienna. The commode is of satin birch veneer with ebony line inlay on the drawers and top. The middle of 3 drawers is recessed and flanked by 2 ebonized columns. 4 ebonized tapering legs. Bufalo horn shield escutcheons, original locks and keys. All in perfect condition.

* Biedermeier furniture was the focus at the Vienna Applied Arts museum in 1896. The many visitors to this exhibition were so influenced by this style and its elegance that a new revival period became popular amongst European cabinetmakers. This revival period influenced the Art Deco style and the various Bauhaus styles.
