The central part of the secretaire is a masterpiece of marquetry of satinwood, amboyna, ebony and other exotic woods, with a hellenic temple as a central theme. The 3 small drawers on each side have tunbridge type marquetry and ivory or bone pulls. The central door, through a ingenious hidden mechanism, opens to reveal 3 further interior drawers. The brick design below it is truly the front of a large drawer that only opens when 2 small of the bricks open to serve as pulls. The door as writing surface uniquely 3 positions: 1) fully open, 2) fully vertically closed and 3) retracted, pushing it towards the interior so that the marquetry designs can be enjoyed without the door being fully open and in the way. All the exterior doors and drawers have keys and ivory or bone escutcheons. The secretaire divides into 3 pieces to facilitate transport.
