Elegant antique Biedermeier Revival* satin birch bureau with cylinder top and attractive interior of 9 convex fronted small drawers, central cabinet with 2 hidden drawers flanked by 2 turned and ebonized columns. The writing drawers slides outward revealing a central leather lined writing surface that doubles as a lectern and as a storage compartment with 2 additional storage spaces on either side of it that slide open. All small drawers and sliding surfaces have ivory knobs. Below the cylinder top there are 3 large capacity drawers terminating in a serpentine skirted plinth base with ebonized accents. All drawers have shield shaped ivory/bone keyhole escutcheons with original locks and keys. The bureau divides into 3 pieces for ease of transport.
* Biedermeier furniture was the focus at the Vienna Applied Arts museum in 1896. The many visitors to this exhibition were so influenced by this style and its elegance that a new revival period became popular amongst European cabinetmakers. This revival period influenced the Art Deco style and the various Bauhaus styles.
