Davenport Bureau Desk Victorian

Description

Victorian burr and figured walnut Davenport bureau with curved mahogany frontal pillars and tooled leather lined writing surface. Raising the writing surface one sees a large open compartment below it of light coloured birch and with 4 small drawers, two of them simulated at the rear. At the rear top, there is another burr walnut veneered top that by raising it, one finds several interior divided compartments including some hidden ones. On the right side there are 4 mahogany lined drawers and on the left side 4 simulated. The base is of concave design at the front and of square plinth type on the sides and back. The bell shaped turned feet hide ceramic casters under them. The rear of this Davenport is finished in figured walnut so that it does not have to be placed against a wall. All the locks are original and functioning with their keys.

* Davenport desks owe their name to a Captain Davenport who was the first to commission the design, from Gillow's of Lancaster, near the end of the 18th century. In a sense then it could also be considered a Campaign desk though there are no records indicating if Captain Davenport was in the British Army or the Royal Navy. This desk form was popular during the 19th century. There have been numerous reproductions during the 20th century, and amateur cabinetmakers sometimes consider a Davenport to be an interesting project.
