Antique Desk Cylinder Top x-Sir Stafford Cripps Ref. VENDIDO-SOLD

Description

A good 19th century solid mahogany cylinder top kneehole pedestal desk, the cylinder roll enclosing a fitted interior of maple veneered drawers flanking pigeon holes over a pull out triple leather panelled writing surface with flush fitting brass handles and bramah lock, over pedestals enclosed by arched moulded panelled doors revealing three drawers to interior and set on a plinth base. The back of this desk is also finished in mahogany. 8 castors, 4 under each pedestal to facilitate mobility

This fine desk is solid mahogany not only in the exterior but also in the interior.

It will be delivered with accompanying detail associating the desk to Sir Stafford Cripps,Leader of The House of Commons, Chancellor of The Exchequer 1947-50).

Sir Richard Stafford Cripps (born April 24, 1889, London, Eng.died April 21, 1952, Zrich, Switz.) British statesman. A successful lawyer, he served in Parliament (193150). He was on the extreme left of the Labour Party and helped found the Socialist League in 1932. After serving as ambassador to Moscow (194042), he joined the British war cabinet and conducted the Cripps Mission (1942), an unsuccessful attempt to rally Indian support against the Japanese. As chancellor of the Exchequer (194750), he instituted a rigid austerity program to revive Britain's economy.
