Biedermeier Commode - Scandinavia

Description

Impressive and unique Biedermeier-Carl Johan commode of Scandinavian origin of advanced architectural design, appearing almost contemporary. It is of trapezoidal shape asymetrically narrower at the top with pediment of Shinkel* design and ebonized claw feet. The exterior wood is satin birch with 4 drawers all of graduating size with buffalo horn escutcheons. Orinal locks and period keys.

*When we first saw this commode we could not believe that it was early 19th century due to its advanced design and original condition, furthermore it had 20th century knobs although of correct design; the sellers insisted that it was of the period. After exhaustive examination we verified that it was early 19th century and totally original except for the knobs. The sellers having lost the original keys opted for installing new knobs although of the correct design. We had them removed and the holes restored and found 2 original period keys. We restored the commode to its original state and since then have not stopped admiring its beauty and design. A true stroke of luck!
