Antique Commode Linen Press - SOLD

Description

Fine Empire linen press, a work of art of the famous Dutch cabinetmakers among the best of Europe. The piece is constructed with hand pegged mortice and tenon joints and divides in two parts. The finest Antilles figured mahogany is used over oak structure and interior. The proportions and finesse of this piece is reflected everywhere, in the fine carvings of the canted corners below, the finely reeded and ebonized columns above, both with gilt brass Corinthian capitals and bases. The top is of solid mahogany fretwork. Four easily sliding large drawers below and 4 small drawers in the interior above. The back splat of the upper section was replaced as the original had too many age cracks and did not provide a air proof interior. The pulls and all hardware are original. It has been lovingly restored and finished in shellac french polish. It can be dismantled for ease of transport.
